• What are IP rights?
• Introduction to patents in the UK & Europe
• The law in the UK, Patents Act 1977: criteria and benefits of registering a patent
• Distinction with patent for software: are software and business method patents in the UK? (Four step test (Aerotel Ltd v Teleco Holdings Ltd (and others) and Macrossan’s Application [2006] EWCA Civ 1371)
• Difference in protection US/EPO
• Short overview of the European patent
• Commercial considerations in patenting (competitiveness and use of copyright)
