Associate Fellowship (D1)

The Associate Fellowship is especially suited for educators with some teaching and learning responsibilities who are at the start of their careers. This is a career-enhancing step, one which involves both personal and professional development. Find out more about the criteria, the application process, key dates as well as the support that’s available to you.

Is Associate Fellowship right for you?

Associate Fellowship is typically suitable for:

  • early career researchers with some teaching responsibilities (eg PhD students who teach)
  • educators who are new to teaching
  • staff who support student learning, including demonstrators and technicians

To find out more, read Descriptor 1 of the Professional Standards Framework (PSF2023)

At Queen Mary you can gain Associate Fellowship through our Teaching Recognition Programme, or by completing our taught Certificate of Learning and Teaching (CILT).

Ways of applying

Dialogic process

If you decide to apply using the Dialogic process, you’ll need to submit evidence of your practice using an e-porfolio, alongside a supporting statement from one referee. You’ll then be invited to a Professional Dialogue to explore and discuss the evidence that you’ve provided.

Written process

If you decide to apply using the Written process, you’ll need to submit a written Account of Professional Practice (APP) and a supporting statement from one referee.

Next steps

We suggest that you review the guidance notes and, if you have any questions, book a drop-in session with the team. If you’ve decided that Associate Fellowship is right for you, and you have considered the application route, please book onto one of our AFHEA Application Drafting Workshops.
