Studentships

Research Studentships

Queen Mary offers a range of studentships for research degree students in all Schools/Institutes that may provide funding towards living costs and/or university fees.

You can search for studentships offered by Queen Mary, before applying online. Schools/Institutes are responsible for selecting or nominating students for awards. Please contact your prospective School/Institute if you have any questions about the studentship selection process.

If you receive a formal offer of funding, you will be sent a Studentship Acceptance Form. Please sign to confirm your acceptance of the terms and conditions of the offer and return the form to the department that sent the offer to you by the date specified in the offer letter. If no form is received Queen Mary will assume that the offer has been declined.

Enrolment

Payments can be authorised only when a student has fully enrolled with Queen Mary.

Students in receipt of studentships are strongly advised to complete online pre-enrolment, though MySIS, as early as possible in the enrolment period at the beginning of their studies. Students who are fully enrolled and have provided their bank details will be paid by BACS.

Continuing students are required to re-enrol every year in late August irrespective of their date of initial enrolment. Stipend payments in August for the month of September will be processed as usual. Payments in September for the month of October will be paid only if the student has re-enrolled via MySIS. If a payment is missed due to the student not being enrolled, it will be paid on the next available weekly payment run or with the next month’s stipend.

Payments

Queen Mary has introduced monthly stipend payments for the 2024-25 academic year.

Monthly payments to PGR students will begin with effect from the October 2024 stipend. The payment for October will be transferred into bank accounts by or on 24 September 2024.  From then onwards research students will be paid monthly, in advance, on the 24th day of each month or on the previous Friday if the 24th occurs on a Saturday or Sunday. The only exception is December, when the payment will be made before the university Christmas closure period.   The first monthly stipend payment will be made in September for the month of October 2024.

Payments are arranged by the Research Degrees Office and the Finance Department.

Please see the FAQs below for more information.

Continuation of awards is dependent on satisfactory academic progress, as assessed by School and university monitoring processes outlined in School handbooks, the Academic Regulations and the Code of Practice.

Please note that studentships may be suspended when students interrupt their studies: for information about the financial implications of interrupting your studies and the situations in which payments may be continued, please see our advice about interruption or contact the Research Degrees Officer for your school.

Stipend Rate

2024/2025 standard funding year (1 October to 30 September)

The standard stipend rate for full-time students paid by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI – the Research Councils) is £21,237. This includes a London Weighting allowance of £2,000.

The monthly payment is £1769.75.

The annual stipend rate paid to part-time students is 50% of the full-time rate.

2023/2024 standard funding year (1 October to 30 September)

The standard stipend rate for full-time students paid by QMUL and UKRI was £20,622. This included a London Weighting allowance of £2,000.

The total stipend paid to students over a year and the payment made each month may vary for several reasons, for example:

  • Some students receive a different stipend amount according to the Research Council, or type of funding scheme.
  • Some students may be paid for one or two months because their stipend will finish during the payment period.
  • Some students may have been overpaid previously (for example, due to interrupting studies after payment) and the overpayment is being recovered through a reduced stipend.
  • Some students are also funded by external business and industry partners, and these may receive an additional payment of varying amounts.
  • Charities and external funders pay students different amounts according to the terms of their studentships, which can be more or less than the Queen Mary and UKRI rate.

FAQs

For the main cohort of students, the first monthly stipend payment is for the month of October 2024.  The payment for October will be in student's bank accounts around the 24th September 2024.

Please note!

  • New students will be paid once they are fully enrolled and have provided their bank details.
  • Depending on the timing of enrolment, the stipend will be paid in the next available weekly or monthly payment run.
  • If a student enrols after the offer start date of their funding, their payment schedule may need to be amended. A new student cannot be paid stipend for a month in which they were not enrolled. For example, if the studentship starts with effect from 1 October but the student enrols in November, they will not receive the stipend payment for October.

Research students, in receipt of stipend payments managed by the Research Degrees Office (RDO), will be paid on the 24th of each month or on the previous Friday if the 24th occurs on a Saturday or Sunday.

The only exception is the payment made in December for the month of January. This will be paid a few days earlier before the University closure period in late December.

Please contact the Research Degrees Office (RDO) at researchdegrees@qmul.ac.uk.

As student's stipend is tax-free, the amount due to you each year, as stated in your studentship offer, will be split into twelve equal monthly payments (pro-rata for students starting later than the main cohort, in October).

Example: Students in receipt of QMUL and UKRI stipend for the 2024-25 academic year will receive an annual amount of £21,237, which will be paid as £1769.75 per month.

Please note that there is a distinction between funding year and academic year.

Funding year, for the majority of studentship schemes, is from 1 October to 30 September. Therefore, stipend increase comes into effect every October.

Academic year is from 1 August to 31 July. Students are required to complete the online re-enrolment every August.

Please log into MySIS and click on the top tab ‘My Finances’ => then navigate to the ‘Bank Account Details - (stipend payments)’ link.

Students, in receipt of studentships, do not have a payslip, because stipend is not a salary.

Each time a stipend payment is processed by the Finance Accounts Payable team, a remittance advice slip is emailed to the student. Please check you spam-box, just in case the emails have been re-directed there.

Please contact the RDO, quoting your student ID number, and request a personalised student funding letter, containing your annual stipend payments: researchdegrees@qmul.ac.uk

When you login to MySIS, there is tab called 'Funding', on your student record page.

There, you will be able to see past and future payments.
