Implementing a Law of Ecocide

Led by David Whyte from School of Law

Published:

Research:

This project aims to advance the implementation of a new law of ecocide in Catalonia and Spain. It seeks to address the legal gaps that shield powerful corporations from environmental accountability. The research, led by Professor Whyte and supported by the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) political party, delves into the impact of ecocide laws on Spanish companies. The central argument, drawn from Whyte's work, emphasizes the need to consider the corporate structure in legal responses to environmental crises.

Impact:

The project's impact spans legal, social, and environmental dimensions. It aligns with the global momentum for ecocide as an international crime. Stakeholders, including politicians, activists, and grassroots organizations, benefit from strengthened proposals for a new law. The goal is to influence debates in the Catalan and Spanish Parliaments. The potential outcomes include improved corporate accountability, enhanced environmental protection, and a more robust legal framework.

Funding Allocation:

The allocated funds were strategically used to support key components of the project. A significant portion facilitated a postdoctoral researcher's five weeks of dedicated work. Translation costs covered the essential translation of documents and the final report. Travel expenses were directed towards trips to Barcelona and London for essential team engagements. Notably, in-kind contributions, including report design and additional translation by CUP, provided valuable support to the project.
