Banknotes carry more germs than a toilet seat

Published:

Commenting on Dr Cutler’s recent study of bank notes in the UK, which discovered that used notes “contain more bacteria than a toilet seat”, Hartlepool Mail columnist John Watson says: “If any of my regular readers have any bacteria-laden notes that they can’t now bear to pick up... in the interests of the nation’s health and wellbeing, I’ll do my best to find a new home for them.” Dr Cutler's research found that notes can carry E.coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Some 200 notes and 45 credit cards were analysed and it was discovered that 26 per cent of the notes and 47 per cent of the cards had high levels of bacteria.
