Learning Café: Transforming Academic Support at SBBS

The School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences has launched the Learning Café this semester. A fresh, informal way for students to get academic support without the pressure of a formal setting.

Sessions will run every Wednesday, starting February 5th, from 1-3 pm in Graduate Centre, Room 222.  

Why Now?

In today's academic environment, traditional support systems can fall short. Since the pandemic, students have had to navigate hybrid learning, career worries, and increasing academic pressures. The Learning Café is here to help. Inspired by successful models from the School of Mathematical Sciences, Learning Café reimagines traditional office hours as an open, welcoming space where students can seek guidance without the pressure of formal appointments.  

Whether you need help with your dissertation, coursework advice, or just a chat about your career options, you can drop in and speak to any academic available. This initiative particularly targets dissertation and coursework support, with flexibility to adapt to changing student needs throughout the semester. 

"Students have consistently asked for more flexible access to academic support," notes Dr. Sally Faulkner. "Learning Café provides immediate answers to pressing questions - whether about dissertations, career paths, or complex course content - in a welcoming environment."  

"Our student voice highlighted the need for support that goes beyond office hours," explains Dr. Tim Fulton. "We're ensuring all SBBS students can access this vital resource." 

There’s no need to book—just come along during the session and get the support you need. Academic staff from all program groups will be involved, making sure there’s a wide range of expertise on hand. Plus, with tea, coffee, and biscuits provided, it’s a great opportunity to chat, ask questions, and feel part of the SBBS academic community.   

The Learning Café is part of SBBS’s ongoing commitment to responsive education, creating a community where both students and staff can engage in meaningful academic discussions. Beyond improving academic support and assessment feedback, the Learning Café creates valuable opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning and productive student-staff interaction.
