SBBS Careers Day 2025
On Wednesday, February 12th, the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences hosted its third annual Careers Day, a packed event designed to help final-year students figure out what’s next—whether that’s further study, landing a grad job, or just getting a better idea of their options.

With interactive workshops, panel discussions, and a networking session, the day brought together students, alumni, and professionals from a wide range of industries, including healthcare, medical research, education, social care, environmental charities, marketing, and more.
Career Advice, Straight from the Experts
The Careers Day was shaped by students, who shared their thoughts and interests in the run-up to the event. As a result, the programme was tailored to their needs and included:
- Further Study & Graduate Roles Workshop – Guidance on postgraduate options and career pathways.
- Interview Skills Workshop – Practical tips on how to impress employers.
- Alternative Careers & Alumni Stories Panel – Insights from graduates who took less conventional career routes.
- Careers in Healthcare Panel – Professionals from the NHS and beyond sharing their experiences.
- Careers in Research Panel – Experts discussing opportunities in academia and industry research.
One of the best parts? Students themselves led the panel discussions, making sure the conversations stayed relevant and engaging. The day wrapped up with an informal networking evening, where students had the chance to chat one-on-one with industry professionals, alumni, and recruiters.
What Students Thought
The feedback from students who attended was overwhelmingly positive:
🗣️ “The session was really helpful in giving me a better understanding of what interviewers prefer and want to see from interviewees, which was really helpful! Thank you!”
🗣️ “Thank you. It’s amazing that this is provided for the students.”
🗣️ “I really enjoyed how there was such a wide range of careers to talk with. It was really interesting to learn about the different paths graduates have taken and has really opened my eyes to all that is out there.”
Industry Guests and Alumni Get Involved
A big highlight of the day was hearing from SBBS alumni who came back to share their career journeys. Their stories gave students a real insight into the different paths available after graduation:
🎓 “I really enjoyed being a part of the Alternative Careers Alumni Stories panel. It was great to share my experience with the students, answer their engaging questions, and learn more about the experiences of the other panellists. I wanted to take part in this event as I believe it is a great way for SBBS students to increase their awareness and see examples of the varying career opportunities available to them.”
🎓 “I had a wonderful time joining the QMUL SBBS Careers Day. It was great to meet with so many driven students who were trying to understand how to kick-start their careers! I was especially pleased to take part in a panel which showcased alternative career options, showing students that there are a whole host of career paths out there, no matter your degree.”
Industry guests were also impressed by the enthusiasm and ambition of SBBS students. Andrea McDonnell (Managing Director, Barts Health Education Academy) summed it up perfectly:
🗣️ "The students were brilliant and will be an asset in whichever career they choose.”
Closing Thoughts
It’s clear that the SBBS Careers Day is making a real impact, helping students feel more confident about their next steps after graduation. Whether students came to explore new career ideas, get advice on job applications, or make connections in their chosen field, the event gave them plenty to think about.
A massive thank you to all the speakers, alumni, and students who made the day such a success! We’re already looking forward to next year’s Careers Day—bigger, better, and packed with even more opportunities.
"What started as a simple initiative has evolved into something truly special. Seeing our undergraduates take ownership of this careers day, developing it to meet their needs while engaging with industry and alumni, makes us incredibly proud. It's a perfect example of how student-led initiatives can flourish when given the right foundation." - Dr. Sally Faulkner, Director of Education and Dr. Tim Fulton, Deputy Director of Education for Undergraduate Studies
