The One Show visited Queen Mary for a segment on how warmer weather in winter is affecting bumblebees. Professor Lars Chittka from the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences discusses his research, which ‘rewrites the bumblebee rule book’, explaining how bees are tagged or chipped with the same technology used in Oyster cards, so their movement can be logged. Bees are weighed on departure and when they return, to see how much nectar they are collecting. It appears they are collecting as much nectar now during winter as they do in warmer months.
