Project Title: Detaching from Unwanted Influences: Using SSVEP

Summary: My PhD project aims to explore the neural mechanisms behind human decision-making, specifically focusing on how people voluntarily detach from external visual influences and biases. Despite efforts to resist sensory cues, people often struggle to consciously avoid their impact on decision-making. While much research has examined how attention is involuntarily captured, voluntary detachment from irrelevant information is less understood. This project will use EEG and possibly MEG to identify neuro-markers related to voluntary detachment and assess the effectiveness of people’s introspection (i.e., metacognition of decision-making process).

The research will also investigate how detachment is altered in individuals with mental health disorders like anxiety and depression, where impaired attentional control may heighten susceptibility to biases. By understanding these neural changes, the project aims to advance knowledge of decision-making in both healthy individuals and clinical populations.

Additionally, the project will explore potential interventions to improve the ability to disengage from irrelevant influences. This includes investigating brain-computer interface (BCI) techniques to enhance cognitive control. Through neuroimaging and behavioral studies, the project seeks to offer new insights into improving decision-making and attentional control in various populations.
