The place of God in the employment relationship: Calling, career and women’s status: The case of clergywomen in the Methodist and Anglican Churches.

Abstract

The work of clergywomen in the Anglican and Methodist Churches is characterised by sex discrimination at the same time as satisfaction with their work and the need to follow their calling regardless of the difficulties. Through an analysis of conventional employment practices such as recruitment and performance review within the Churches, significance of having God as a party to the employment relationship is considered highlighting the importance of religious calling and the requirement for ‘sacrifice’ on ability to endure their work and to challenge discriminatory treatment.
