How does it feel to be recognised by the Women in Marketing Awards for the second time?

"Thank you! Being recognised by the Women in Marketing Awards for the second time is an honor. It feels immensely gratifying to see my work resonate within the marketing and research communities. These awards celebrate the impactful role of women in marketing, and being part of such a prestigious recognition aligns perfectly with my commitment to addressing contemporary societal and market trends through rigorous, meaningful research. This acknowledgment inspires me to continue bridging academic insights with real-world challenges, particularly in areas like sustainable marketing and ethical AI."

Can you tell us a bit about the work or initiatives that led to this nomination?

"This nomination reflects my dedication to advancing knowledge in marketing research, particularly in the realm of emerging technologies, with a special focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI). A key area of my current research involves exploring responsible AI applications in service and sustainable marketing. Additionally, my work on responsible AI has been instrumental in uncovering how ethical and sustainable practices can drive innovation and performance in marketing. These efforts not only enrich academic discourse but also address pressing global challenges, such as sustainability and responsible tech.nological adoption. I’m especially proud of how my research bridges theoretical insights with practical solutions, demonstrating the transformative potential of responsible innovation in marketing."

What is your perspective on the importance of awards like the Women in Marketing Awards, especially in recognising and supporting women in the field of marketing?

"Awards like the Women in Marketing (WIM) Awards play a crucial role in celebrating the diverse contributions of women in the field of marketing. They provide a platform to highlight groundbreaking work and innovative approaches, inspiring others to push boundaries and embrace creativity in their careers. For me, the significance of the WIM Awards goes beyond personal recognition. These awards emphasize the importance of inclusivity and representation, showcasing the critical perspectives women bring to addressing contemporary challenges in marketing.  The WIM Awards also create a sense of community and mentorship, offering opportunities for women to connect, collaborate, and uplift one another. This support network is invaluable in ensuring more women can thrive and make a lasting impact in marketing."

Have there been any particular challenges or milestones in your career journey that make this recognition feel especially meaningful?

"Absolutely. This recognition feels particularly meaningful as it reflects a career shaped by both challenges and milestones. Building a research portfolio in a competitive academic field requires resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to delivering impactful work. One of the most rewarding milestones in my journey was transitioning from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, which acknowledged my contributions to marketing research and education. Publishing in leading journals and co-leading cross-disciplinary projects have been defining moments, particularly my focus on responsible AI and its role in addressing pressing societal challenges. These experiences, coupled with my dedication to advancing innovative solutions in marketing, make this recognition by the Global Women in Marketing Awards particularly special. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, innovation, and the transformative potential of responsible AI in shaping the future of the field."

How has your experience in marketing academia and practice influenced your approach to your work and leadership?

"My experience in both marketing academia and practice has been instrumental in shaping my approach to work and leadership. In academia, I’ve learned the importance of rigorous research, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of marketing theories. This foundation allows me to challenge conventional ideas and develop innovative frameworks that address current and emerging market challenges, particularly in areas like responsible AI and sustainability. From a practical standpoint, my collaborations with industry partners, such as SMEs and tech companies, have reinforced the importance of bridging theory with real-world applications. I’ve seen firsthand how academic insights can drive meaningful change in practice, particularly when it comes to ethical AI adoption and sustainable marketing strategies. This practical experience has also influenced my leadership style, emphasizing collaboration, inclusivity, and the importance of fostering a supportive environment where both students and colleagues can thrive.

As Programme Director for the MSc Marketing programme and module leader of the newly developed module, 'AI and Big Data in Marketing,' I prioritise developing an interdisciplinary approach, combining academic rigor with practical insights to equip students with the skills needed to navigate a rapidly evolving marketing landscape. Additionally, attending various leadership courses, including Aurora (Advance HE's leadership development initiative for women), has facilitated this journey. This blend of academic and practical experience is enabling me to be a more effective leader and educator, focused on driving both academic excellence and real-world impact."

Are there any particular trends or changes within the field of marketing that you are passionate about or that you think are vital to the future of the industry?

"I’m passionate about two key trends shaping the future of marketing: the ethical deployment of AI and the growing focus on sustainability. AI offers exciting opportunities for personalised experiences and data-driven decisions, but it must be used responsibly to avoid biases and ensure transparency. At the same time, sustainability is becoming central to consumer choices, requiring businesses to integrate ethical practices into their marketing strategies. Both AI and sustainability are transforming the marketing landscape, and the future lies in responsibly harnessing technology to address global challenges."

What advice would you give to other women aiming to make a meaningful impact in the marketing field?

"My advice to other women aiming to make a meaningful impact in the marketing field is to embrace both your unique strengths and the power of collaboration. The marketing industry is constantly evolving, so it’s essential to remain adaptable and open to new ideas. Networking and mentorship are key. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals and mentors who inspire and challenge you. These relationships provide invaluable support and open doors to opportunities you may not have considered. Collaboration with peers, both within and outside of marketing, is crucial for expanding your perspective and gaining fresh insights.

Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of persistence. The road to making a meaningful impact can be long, and there will be challenges along the way. However, staying focused and committed to your goals will ultimately help you break through. Your contributions can make a lasting difference in the industry, so continue to lead with integrity and a dedication to making a positive impact."

How does the recognition from an organisation like Women in Marketing influence your future goals and projects in marketing?

"Recognition from an organization like WIM is incredibly motivating and reinforces my commitment to advancing responsible marketing practices. It inspires me to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation in marketing while staying focused on the greater good. Moving forward, this recognition, along with my nomination for the HSS Award for the category of Landmark Publication at Queen Mary in 2024, will drive my future projects to explore how technology can be used responsibly to create positive societal impact, while also encouraging sustainable practices within the industry. It strengthens my resolve to lead by example and inspire others in the field."
