Project title

Modeling Aid’s Role in Democratization: Analyzing Elite-Citizen Incentives and Payoffs in Political Transitions

Project description

My research explores democratization as a multi-step bargaining process between elites and citizens within a Rational Choice Theory framework. I investigate how foreign aid influences these bargaining processes by altering individual and group payoffs under different political institutions, impacting the preferences and incentives for democratization. The project addresses conflicting findings in the literature by incorporating an interdisciplinary approach — combining economic theory, conflict analysis, and political philosophy — to identify key incentive structures. By integrating aid inflows into a microeconomic framework, I consider key factors like corruption, income redistribution mechanisms, and public support for democracy.
