Become a mentor to a Queen Mary student, including those from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds, to improve their employment prospects.

Since launching in 2018, over 400 mentors working across a wide range of industries have supported our students. Our SBM Mentoring programme provides organisations with the opportunity to work with students over a six-month period.

This is a unique opportunity to enhance professional skills such as leadership and communication. Applications for this year's cycle (November 2024 - April 2025) is closed.

If you have any queries, please email the SBM Mentoring Team.

SBM Mentoring is a six-month long programme which connects students from the School of Business and Management (SBM) with a member of our alumni community, or an experienced UK-based working professional. Through these one-to-one relationships, mentors support students to make better-informed career choices, develop their employability skills, and gain confidence in applying for graduate job roles.

A professional ideally in the following areas/functions: Accountancy, Asset Management, Banking, Consultancy, Finance, Government, HR, Law (for Business with Law students), Marketing and Entrepreneurship. You must be working and living in the UK.

  • Be available to support a student for 6 months (November 2024 – April 2025) voluntarily (we ask mentors to meet with mentees for a minimum of 1 hour per month, this can be face-to-face, or via telephone/Zoom).
  • Ensure that you are regularly communicating with your mentee in a timely manner.

As a Mentor, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain personal satisfaction from helping a young person with their career development.
  • Reflect on your own work practices and hear fresh perspectives from those who are soon-to-be entering your industry.
  • Enhance your professional development and acquire new skills such as, leadership and communication.
  • Improve your professional networks by attending events and joining our LinkedIn group.
  • Raise the profile of your organisation amongst University staff and students.
