Introduction: The Basic Tutorial

The basic tutorial contains six exercises: five of these offer instruction in formatting footnotes (although the advice applies equally to endnotes), while a sixth provides guidance about how to present bibliographies. Each exercise includes a copy of the title-page and publication details of a work to allow you to practise your citation skills. To get the most out of these exercises, there are four points to note:

• To indicate a word or phrase should be italicised, enclose it in * *. For example, write Romeo and Juliet as *Romeo and Juliet*
• You can enlarge details of a book's publication by left-clicking on the image. Left-clicking again on the enlarged image will remove it
• Clicking the 'Check your Footnote Now' button should automatically assess your footnote and isolate any errors it may contain. You can also manually check your footnote by clicking 'Show Answer' at the bottom of each exercise (under 'Show Answer' you'll also find some helpful comments on the footnote)
• In the boxes where you type your footnotes, ensure you don't have any blank spaces before the start of your footnote: this can confuse the scripts which assess your footnote's accuracy

Technical Note: This tutorial has been successfully tested on the latest versions (as of September 2012) of Opera, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. On some browsers, once you have submitted an incorrect footnote, you will need to refresh your browser before resubmitting your revised answer. If you don't refresh your browser, the script will fail to recognise the changes you have made.
