School of Languages, Linguistics and Film

Department of Film

We are ranked FIRST in the UK for the books and films our staff make (REF 2021) and have been in the TOP TEN in the league tables for Film Studies teaching for two decades. We offer our students an unrivalled opportunity to develop their filmmaking and creative and critical thinking skills.

Studying film at Queen Mary immerses you in the vibrant contemporary scene of cinema and moving image culture in London.

Our film practice modules include scriptwriting and directing, documentary filmmaking, creative producing, artists’ moving image, and a film practice dissertation. We equip students with the ability to work in teams and individually, producing critically informed festivals-ready films, and the skills to enter the film, television and media industries, as well as the wider sector of arts and culture.

Our students learn about film as culture, politics, and art in modules that cover global film histories and industries, philosophical approaches to the cinema, and contemporary cultural issues such as decolonising and diversifying the curriculum, the climate emergency, war and peace, film and ethics, and disability and neurodiversity.

Our film academics are committed to creating a dynamic student experience on and off campus, with visits to major cultural institutions such as the Tate Modern and the BFI London Film Festival, as well as on campus writing residencies, filmmaking bootcamps, and student film festivals. Our new moving image laboratory, BLOC, includes the most accessible and high specification UK campus cinema, featuring Dolby Atmos surround sound, hosting guest scholars and high-profile figures from the film industry.

Graduates of Film at QMUL have gone on to work in UK film festivals, film journalism, progressed to doctoral research, joined production companies, and produced and directed award-winning feature films and TV series; see our student profile page.
