Profile

My research explores British Chinese cinema through the lens of identity, authorship, and representation, with a particular focus on how family functions as a key site of cultural negotiation. Drawing on Hamid Naficy’s theory of Accented Cinema, I examine how filmmakers of Chinese heritage - as well as non-Chinese directors engaging with Chinese subjects - navigate questions of belonging, marginalisation, and narrative voice. Family relationships often serve as a focal point through which broader diasporic experiences are explored, revealing tensions between generations, cultural values, and the sense of “home” in both physical and emotional terms. Through close analysis of films across different formats, my project considers how themes of family, identity, language, and memory contribute to a deeper understanding of British Chinese cinema. I hold a BA in Film Production from the Beijing Film Academy and the University for the Creative Arts and an MA in Film, Television, and Moving Image from the University of Westminster.
