Diagnostic Tests

If you wish to join a beginner class (level 1a), you do not need to show your proficiency level in your chosen language.

If you wish to join a lower intermediate class (level 1b), you need to produce evidence to show your proficiency level: Completion of level 1a; or CEFR A1; or GCSE Grade C or D

If you wish to join an intermediate class (level 2a), you need to produce evidence to show your proficiency level: Completion of level 1b; or CEFR A2; or GCSE Grade A or B

If you wish to join an advanced class (level 3a), you need to produce evidence to show your proficiency level: Completion of level 2b; or CEFR B2, or As Level

If you do not have any evidence, you can use the following diagnostic tests to check your level:

ARABIC DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Arabic Language and Culture 2b, take the Intermediate level test.

BENGALI DIAGNOSTIC TEST:

If you are thinking of enrolling for Bengali Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.

CATALAN DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Catalan Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Catalan Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Catalan Language and Culture 2b, take the Intermediate level test.

CHINESE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 1b, take the Lower Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 2b, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 3 or 3a, take the Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Chinese Language and Culture 3b or 4a, take the Advanced level test.

FRENCH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French Language and Culture 2b, take the Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for French Language and Culture 3 or 3a, take the Upper Intermediate level test.

GERMAN DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for German Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for German Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for German Language and Culture 2b, take the Intermediate level test.

JAPANESE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Japanese Language and Culture 1b, take the Post-beginner level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Japanese Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Japanese Language and Culture 2b, take the Elementary level test.

SPANISH DIAGNOSTIC TESTS:

  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish Language and Culture 1b, take the Elementary level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish Language and Culture 2 or 2a, take the Lower Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish Language and Culture 2b, take the Intermediate level test.
  • If you are thinking of enrolling for Spanish Language and Culture 3 or 3a, take the Upper Intermediate level test.
