Summary
The International Research Network Language and Gender: Academic Research and Practical Implementation brings together practitioners and academics from various different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Permanent network participants reside in 15 countries and cover 12 languages.
The participating academics, all leading researchers in their field, work in diverse disciplines and fields such as Linguistics, Psychology, Translation Studies, and Languages. They all conduct research on gender and language, with a focus on encouraging gender-inclusive language. The participating practitioners work for prestigious organisations such as the UK Civil Service; the Council of the European Union; the Carbon Trust; the Language Councils of Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland; to name just a few.
The network leads to interdisciplinary collaboration and facilitates the transfer of knowledge and expertise across the different aforementioned disciplines and fields. It advances knowledge and understanding in these fields by facilitating collaborations between the participating academics and practitioners, promoting research on gender and language, and sharing best practices with regard to the use of gender-inclusive language in various contexts. The network also contributes to the broader societal discourse on gender and language, including the role of language in shaping our perceptions of gender, and the importance of gender-inclusive language use in developing gender equality.
The activities and outcomes of the network are not only of interest to practitioners but also to a range of academic audiences and disciplines, including Linguistics, Psychology, Translation Studies, and Languages. Researchers and practitioners have a positive impact on each other’s understanding of their work. Moreover, the network facilitates further co-operation, especially within larger research projects.
The network's first year lead to three project conferences / workshops that led to significant outputs: The two academic workshops, i.e. the one on terminology, and the one on state of research and desiderata, resulted in one edited volume each, to be published in 2025 by De Gruyter Mouton and by Palgrave. The workshop for practitioners resulted in a stakeholder targeted report that contains the key highlights, findings, and recommendations resulting from the workshops. This document has been disseminated among the project participants, and is available for interested outsiders on the project website.
Detailed information about the research network, including the names and affiliations of the key participants; past and future activities; the rationale; the research context; aims and objectives; outputs, dissemination and impact can be found via the above links.
