Introduction of project, content, and participants; group discussions. This event was for all research networking project participants. The event informed the following conferences / workshops with regard to the academics’ and practitioners’ questions, needs, and sharing of information and good practice.
Directly contributing were 31 presenters, residing in 14 countries, working on 15 languages - and well beyond. In addition, there were another 51 attendees from 21 countries. The total number of 82 participants shows that the interest in this subject area is considerable, and that cooperation between practitioners and academics is indeed what people are missing.

Conference & Workshop 1 “Language and Gender: Achieving Conceptual Clarity”. Click here for the programme, presentation files, and recordings.
Selected academics presented papers, with other interested academics and practitioners joining as “attending only”, to participate in discussions, etc. On this workshop, we specifically dealt with unclear and overlapping use of terms such as “gender-inclusive”, “gender-fair”, “gender-neutral”, etc. in various disciplines and languages. The aim of the conference / workshop was to gain conceptually clarity; ideally standardisation.
In total, 137 participants registered for the conference. They were based in in 40 countries: Algeria, Austria, Beirut, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, DR Congo, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malta, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, USA.
This conference / workshop will lead to further research that will be published in an edited volume, with a publisher of excellent international standing. No proceedings will be published, but the archive of recordings and presentations can be accessed via the above link.
Conference & Workshop 2 “Language and Gender: Research and Desiderata”
Selected academics presented papers covering 12 European languages. An overlook of the discipline – past and present – was provided, and research desiderata were discussed. Embedded was contemporary research conducted by the respective speaker/s.
Others people who were interested in the subject were invited to join as “attending only”, and were given the opportunity to participate in the discussions and Q&As. To ensure fair access for all, no charges/fees were raised to attend this event.
In total, 126 participants registered for the conference. They were based in in 30 countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, DR Congo, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, Ukraine, and the USA.
There will be no printed conference proceedings, but most presentations were recorded and are available on the conference website (link above).
Conference & Workshop 3 “Language and Gender: Practical Aspects and Implementation”
This conference was led by practitioners involved in the International Research Networking Project. Focusing on questions related to the implementation of gender-inclusive language, they presented achievements and challenges within their organizations and companies.
Furthermore, individuals interested in the subject were invited to join as “attending only” and were given the opportunity to participate in discussions and Q&As. To ensure fair access for all, no charges or fees were required to attend the event.
Over 130 people participated in the conference. Excluding the presenters, 119 attendees registered for the event. They were based in 35 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malta, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the United Kingdom (UK), Ukraine, and the United States of America (USA).
The presenters were enthusiastic about the subject area and are eager to push the initiative further.
This workshop will result in a stakeholder targeted report. There will be no printed proceedings, but most presentations were recorded and are available on the event website (link above).
Closing Event: Research Networking Project
This non-public event was open only for all participants in the research networking project. It brought together a select group of academics and practitioners to collaborate, draw meaningful conclusions, and explore opportunities for future network initiatives.
