Prof Leigh Oakes delivers keynote lecture at Aberystwyth University
From the pioneer years to the latest methodological trends: what next for language policy and planning research?
Prof Leigh Oakes was invited to deliver a keynote lecture at the ‘Research Methodologies and Regional or Minority Language Research’ conference held at Aberystwyth University (9–10 July 2024). Drawing on his chapter in The Routledge Handbook of Language Policy and Planning, he outlined the key stages in the development of language policy and planning research, before highlighting problems with where the field is currently at and suggesting ways forward for the future. With a paper on regional languages in France, he also contributed to a panel at the same conference on the benefits that the emerging interdisciplinary framework of ‘normative language policy’ can offer to the study of minority language revitalisation.
