Committee members

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee meets termly and comprises members from all areas within the School and all career stages from PhD students to the Head of School.

*The membership of the committee is currently under review.

*The School acknowledges that the term 'BAME' may not be entirely representative and can conflate diverse groups. It is used by the School as it aligns with terminology widely used by the University, allowing effective use of existing data.

Academic EDI Lead

Dr Alston J. Misquitta
Academic – Centre for Condensed Matter Physics

I am a condensed matter physicist who could also be a computational chemist. I  specialise in the theoretical developments and modelling of intermolecular interactions, and recently blend machine learning with my work on physical models.

Science needs a diversity of viewpoints and ideas, and this diversity is often reflected in the diversity of people involved. I hope that in my role as EDI co-chair I will, together with all the team, be able to contribute to the increasing diversity in our School, and also to strengthen the sense of inclusion and belonging across all levels, as this is key to a properly functioning body.

Professional Services EDI Lead

Heather Williams
School Manager

Ensuring our School is more diverse, inclusive, and that all opportunities are accessible to everyone is incredibly important to me.

Committee Member

Dr Linda Cremonesi
Reader In Particle Physics

I work to make sure that all voices and concerns heard within the School.

Committee Member

Professor Alan Drew
Professor of Experimental Physics

Having survived a life threatening illness in 2020, which resulted in temporary blindness, deafness and paralysis below the neck, he returned to work a year after with permanent hidden disabilities. With this direct lived experience of returning to work, and a disabled railcard in his pocket, Alan became a board member of a charity in London whose role is to assist disabled people back into the workplace and advise employers make reasonable adjustments to the workplace to enable it. Since returning to work, he has made direct impact in the facilities and working practices at QMUL, and feels it is now the right time to be part of the EDI committee to further this contribution.

Committee Member

Dr Heli Hietala
Lecturer in Space Plasma Physics

In the committee I want to foster inclusivity in our School including family friendly practices and improved workplace accessibility. Small adjustments can make a big difference to people’s wellbeing.

Committee Member

Professor Peter Hobson
Particle Physics Research Centre

It is extremely important to me that we collectively make the School more diverse, ensure everyone feels included, and that every opportunity is accessible to all.

Professor Peter Hobson

Committee Member

Dr Nasima Kanwal
NMR Laboratory Manager

I am committed to fostering an inclusive workplace that values diversity and provides equal opportunities for everyone.

Committee Member

Dr Anthony Phillips
Academic – Centre for Condensed Matter Physics

I am a condensed matter physicist working on designing materials with interesting properties. I joined the committee to help dismantle the barriers that prevent talented people from taking their place in physics.

Committee Member

Professor Marina Resmini
Professor of Materials Chemistry

My research focuses on functional nanomaterials, with applications at the interface of physical and bio/medical sciences, particularly as sensors and drug delivery systems.

Committee Member

Dr Christos Vergis
Postdoctoral Research Assistant In Higgs

I am especially committed to promoting mental health support and helping make Chemistry accessible and representative of society as a whole.

Committee Member

Dr Ji Wu
Research Manager

I believe strongly in equality and creating a diverse workplace with opportunities for all.
