NSSIn the 2024 National Students Survey (NSS), Astronomy at QMUL received a 95% positive score for “Teaching on my Course”, placing it top in the country. It also received over 90% positivity scores for “Academic Support”. By studying on our Astrophysics stream, you would be joining this nationally leading education programme, which is highly valued by our students.

Study options

A range of options for study are available on the Astrophysics stream of our Physics degree: our 3 year BSc, our 4 year BSc with Foundation, and our 4 year MSci. Both the BSc and MSci degrees can optionally be taken with a year abroad (in the 3rd or 4th year at one of our partner institutions) or with professional experience (includes a one-year paid internship).

Modules

As well as gaining a solid grounding in core physics modules and professional skills, on the Astrophysics stream you will have the opportunity to study:

  • Our Universe
  • Planetary Systems
  • Stars
  • Physical Cosmology
  • Physics of Galaxies
  • Spacetime and Gravity
  • Advanced Cosmology (MSci)
  • Astrophysical Plasmas (MSci)
  • Extrasolar Planets and Astrophysical Disks (MSci)
  • Relativity and Gravitation (MSci)
  • Radiative Transfer and Astrochemistry (MSci)
  • Stellar Structure and Evolution (MSci)

Lecturers

Our Astrophysics lecturers recently gave a series of talks at the Royal Institution, see here for the videos of them in action, to get a taste of what studying Astrophysics at QMUL will be like.

Research Project

In your final year, you will undertake a research project on a cutting-edge topic in modern Astrophysics, guided by one of our world-class academic staff. The QMUL Astronomy Unit is an international leader in astrophysics research, with its staff involved in:

ObservatoryYour project can also make use of QMUL’s own Astronomical Observatory on the roof of the Physics and Astronomy building.

In the most recent (2021) Research Excellence Framework (REF), 98% of research in Physics & Astronomy at QMUL was rated 3*/4*, demonstrating its world-leading quality.
