Eva: Tin-carbon composite as anode materials for sodium ion batteries
Abstract: Sodium ion batteries are considered as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries with advantages of Na abundance, relatively low cost material, and potential safety benefits. In terms of anode materials, we are interested to develop Sn anodes as they exhibit high theoretical capacity of 874 mAh/g (Na15Sn4) and stable cycle performance. However, the large volume changes (420%) resulting capacity decay after cycles and energy loss. We propose to solve this with creating nanostructure and introducing carbonaceous matrixes. In this talk, I will present our work to produce Sn-carbon composite with hydrothermal carbonization method. We also use small angle scattering to study microscopic and nanoscopic pores in carbonaceous materials. Moreover, we design modified coin cells for in-situ in-operando x-ray absorption spectroscopy to understand Sn-Na alloying mechanism.
