In the Nielsen Lab (https://nielsen-lab.com/), we have extensive experience in designing and synthesising organic semiconductors for electronic applications. Most recently, we have focused on systems that can interface with biology and act as ion-to-electron transducers in transistor configurations. To build on this, we propose in this PhD project to prepare new organic semiconductors and tailor their properties to meet requirements for neuromorphic computing such as controlled hysteresis and switching times. We will do this by incorporating selective binding sites for specific ions into the semiconductor framework. We will also explore chemical approaches to creating semiconducting channels that can mimic dendritic networks.
