Title:
A role-play-based L4 skills module designed to support Bioscience students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds in bridging the skills gap.
Abstract:
Recent data published by the Office for Students (OfS) shows that students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds in higher education (HE) are less likely to complete their courses. Contributing factors may include, among others, a higher likelihood of having experienced adverse life events and mental health issues, as well as limited educational support before entering HE, compared to their more privileged peers. Additionally, traditional teaching methods—such as lecture-heavy sessions and high-pressure timed exams—fail to provide the support needed for students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds to reach their full potential and develop transferable skills valued by employers. As a result, many of these students lack a sense of belonging in HE, struggle with confidence, and experience imposter syndrome.
In this talk, I will discuss the implementation of the Term 1 module "Professional Skills for L4 Bioscience Students" at a Post-92 University. The module is designed around role-play activities, teamwork and student-centred active learning. It also includes an authentic, self-reflective assessment to help students from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds bridge the skills gap, boost confidence and ultimately reduce inequality and promote social mobility.
