A Year of Growth and Ambition
It’s safe to say that Spring is my favourite time of the year. Colour is returning to the trees, the sun is showing its face a lot more, and Crème Eggs are now fully in season. There’s a tangible hum of excitement in the air as the days get a little longer and the nights a little warmer, accented by a cheery sense of optimism going round which epitomises Spring’s welcome return.
That’s not to say, however, that we’ve spent these past few months hibernating. Far from it! We concluded December with a festive feast in GO Jones, where members ate, drank, and made merry in a manner reminiscent of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol.
We then kicked this semester off with a pizza and board-games event and learned two valuable lessons from the experience: free pizza lasts about as long as a snowball in an oven when students are involved; and you should be prepared for a game of Monopoly to take you well past the four-hour mark!
We also saw the first ChemSoc study session of the year, and it’s always great to see new faces at these sessions.
Going forward, we have a whole range of upcoming events for members to enjoy during the last half of this semester, including a session on elective modules for those going into their 3rd year, more study sessions, and a Food Chemistry session where participants will make all sorts of edible items using chemistry!
Finally, I’m also very excited to announce that the Chemistry Society—alongside Psistar, Women and Queer People in Physics, and the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences—have spent the last few months ironing out all of the details for the first ever SPCS Summer Ball, taking place on June 12th at the stunning Art Pavilion in Mile End Park!
This is sure to be the highlight of the year for us, and we’ve pulled out all the stops in making this the best possible event for those in attendance. If the open bar, photobooth, and live band aren’t enough to entice you, the incredibly priced tickets might be enough to change your mind!
Tickets are open to everyone and are available for purchase on our SU website, where you’ll find more details about the event. I’ll see you there!
