Get Active is the Students’ Union’s recreational sport and activities programme available to all students, staff and alumni. The programme consists of weekly timetabled sessions like wellbeing walks, staff football, Badminton and Volleyball, and structured courses such as Couch to 5k and Beginners'/Intermediate Tennis.

Get Active also gets exclusive access to Tower Hamlets based event such as the Vitality Big Half Marathon. All ability levels are welcome, and no specialist equipment or clothing is required.

The QM Running Group meets on Wednesday lunchtimes, at 12.30pm, outside Dept W. The group includes runners from the Mile End and Whitechapel sites - provided that you don’t mind a brief warm-up run to join us at Dept W.

Our regular Wednesday run is a distance of approximately 4.5 miles to various local destinations following a variety of regular routes. We welcome all academic and administrative staff runners. The local East London area is superb for running with easy access to: Victoria Park, the Regent’s Canal, the Thames - also Docklands, Tower Bridge and London Bridge for even longer runs. Previously, we have encouraged complete novice runners to train and participate in: 5k, 10k races, half marathons and even full marathons. The Running Group is totally free to join so please just bring your enthusiasm to run!

  • To join the QM Running Group: email Paul Kent: p.kent@qmul.ac.uk. You will be added to our Teams membership group, which serves as the noticeboard for the weekly runs.

Take a break from your desk and join us on our weekly Wednesday Wellbeing Walks. The Wellbeing Walk gives you the opportunity to get active, explore the local area and meet new people. Regular routes include walks to Regents Canal and Limehouse Basin, and our Victoria Park loop. Meet at 12.30pm every Wednesday next to the sign in Library Square. This is part of the Get Active programme which is open to all staff, students and alumni.

If you are a staff member who is part of the Queen Mary University alumni, you can continue taking part in a sport or explore a new one to take part in. There are plenty of opportunities within Club Sport for you to get involved. Clubs are run by students for students and alumni, and the Students' Union is home to over 65 sports teams.

Join a sports club, represent your university and compete in local, national and international competitions. Being part of a club is a great social experience and an excellent way to develop your sporting skills.

Community Foundation is the Students’ Union’s sport leadership and workforce development programme. All QMUL staff members are welcome to register as leaders to facilitate sport and physical activity with schools, sport clubs and other organisations in the local community. In return for your outreach, you can benefit from a host of rewards including certificates, clothing and funded sport qualifications.

There is no regular gardening group at the moment.

There are, however, canal clean-ups which staff are welcome to attend and can sign up for via this form. Queries can be directed to sustainability@qmul.ac.uk

Meet most Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes in the Sofa Room (or nearby) in Dept W. Bring your own project or learn how to knit or crochet with one of us. Contact Eliza Murdoch or Roanne Insley for more information.
