Entry requirements

To be eligible for the Queen Mary Summer School, you must meet our entry requirements:

  • You must be 18 or over at the time of study
  • You must meet our academic requirements, as outlined below.
  • All of our courses are taught and assessed in English. If English isn’t your first language, you must meet our English language requirements in order to join the course. 

See below for our specific entry requirements:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to join the summer school.
  • You must have completed High School. We will accept a high school qualification from most countries. Depending on the grading system we would look for the equivalent of an average grade of 70 - 75%, 3.3 GPA or a B+ average.
  • If you are already at University and your home institution uses the four-point Grade Point Average (GPA) scale, we usually require a cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • If your home institution uses the letter scale, we normally require a B+ average
  • If your home institution uses the UK scale, we usually require a 2:1 minimum
  • If your home institution uses a percentage scale, we usually require 65% to 85% average and this will vary by country

These requirements are a guide and each application will be considered against a standard grading equivalency matrix for each country and/or institution

The English Language requirements for entry to Summer School, Study Abroad and Exchange Programmes (applications through the Global Partnerships and Opportunities Office) falls within the following English band: 

  • Band 5: IELTS (Academic) minimum score of 7.0 overall with 6.0 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking for all courses
  • Band 5: TOEFL minimum score 100 overall with 21 in Writing, 19 in Reading, 18 in Listening and 21 in Speaking
  • Band 5: Cambridge C1 Advanced test minimum score 185 overall with 169 in each of Writing, Listening, Reading and Speaking
  • A degree taught in English within the last five years*

*Students from 'Majority English Speaking Countries (as defined on this webpage) DO need to provide evidence of this. Students applying from this list of countries will need to provide English language evidence in the form of their high school transcript or degree certificate.

We welcome international qualifications and we consider every application individually on its academic merit. If you would like to discuss your eligibility with the Summer School Team before submitting an application, you can contact us at summerschool@qmul.ac.uk. To join our summer school you must be 18 years of age or older.

Please be aware that qualifications for summer school differ from the standard Queen Mary Admissions requirements. Acceptance onto the Summer School does not qualify you for acceptance or advance standing admission into any other Queen Mary course, including other Study Abroad Programmes.
