The module’s focus is the unique challenges of the workplace in the creative industries, including film, media, and publishing. The module covers both practical and mental skills. How to build confidence, handle life challenges, thrive in your chosen career, write a CV and cover letter, research work experience opportunities, make a presentation, use your social media to boost your career prospects, start a side-hustle connected to your chosen career, and network online and face to face.

Course aims

The course focus is the unique challenges of the workplace in the creative industries, including film, media, and publishing. The module covers both practical and mental skills. Seminars will cover formal and informal job interviews, workplace etiquette, and dealing with difficult situations. Seminars will be interactive, reflective and supportive. Assessments are designed to be useful and part of your portfolio for prospective work experience and jobs. Skills development:
 
Mental how to: Build your confidence. Handle life challenges. Thrive in your chosen career
 
Practical how to: Write a CV and cover letter. Research work experience opportunities. Find part-time work related to your chosen career. Use your social media to boost your career prospects. Start a side-hustle connected to your chosen career. Network (online and face to face). Make a presentation.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops and field trips. 

Learning outcomes

You will gain:

  • knowledge and understanding of transferable skills
  • knowledge and understanding of careers within the creative industries: film, media and publishing
  • language and communication in relation to personal and professional career development

You will be able to:

  • evidence, evaluate and present transferable and personal skills
  • evidence, evaluate and present career specific skills related to the creative industries
  • improve digital literacy for research and presentation
  • increase research capacity and information expertise
  • learn continuously in a changing environment
