How to navigate the T4 site structure

The blog post covers how to navigate the site structure in T4 when logged in and how to find a specific page to edit.

Published:

When you first log in, you should see your site tree. This will often look like this the first time you use your new account.

The little cross next to the name of the site reveals the site tree when clicked once.

The site name is the actual page at the top of the site tree. This is where you click to edit the page itself.

Click on the little cross to open your site tree. You can always click on a small cross to open what is below it.

The black folders in the site tree are more pages that contain content. The ones with little crosses to the left have further pages below them.

Black folders are visible in the site navigation, eg, they appear in navigation menus. Note the pale empty folders are sections that do not show up in the navigation menus.

In T4, pages are called sections. The pages below a section are sections as well, but they are also often called subsections. Sections can contain further sections and so on, forming a hierarchy of pages down the tree.

Next to each section in the site tree, there is a blue action menu button, this has various options for controlling sections and changing them, editing, or moving them around.

Click on a little cross to the left of any section and you will see more sections (eg, pages) underneath them.

Explore your site and get used to it, so that you can visualise how things work.

Don’t worry if you get lost. Click on Site structure in the top bar and it will always return you to your site tree view.

Finding sections and subsections using the page path

At all times whilst in T4 you can find where you are by following the page path at the top of the site structure or inside the section itself.

The page path or breadcrumbs provided the exact details of page hierarchy and is clickable making it easier to navigate to a page below or above.

If you have navigated to a page in T4 and you are unsure about how it's nested you can hover on the section itself on the site structure to reveal its path

That, in turn, matches with the URL of the page on the live site, in this case, https://www.qmul.ac.uk/t4-support/blog/

Once you have identified the page path or breadcrumb you can enter the page to edit and there you will have the page path at the top. The page path is hyperlinked with the T4 page URL and you can click on each path to navigate if you have access to the pages. This is very helpful when you are working on pages that are nested under various subsections.

You can also navigate around your page hierarchy by using the mini site structure on the left hand of the section page where you can expand subsections and gain access to pages.
