Banner heros are used at the top of landing pages. They allow you to include a little more detail and navigate to other areas of your site/pages from it with the option to add a button.
Here's what a banner hero look like. They are a great way of 'branding' your section with colour and a promotional image.

This is what the content type looks like once you select it for your landing page.
Once you click on Variants in the drop-down menu you'll be taken to a page where you can choose the dimensions and save each version.
You need to make sure you have the appropriate permissions before publishing an image or video. This includes permission of the copyright holder and, in some cases, the permission of anybody in the image (eg a signed consent form). Find out more about this on our Images page.
