Anonymous marking is a useful feature in QMplus that can help to ensure fairness and impartiality in the grading process. By concealing student identities until final grades are released, this feature reduces potential bias and enhances assessment integrity. However, to use anonymous marking effectively, it’s important to understand how it works.
This article provides step-by-step guidance on using anonymous marking in QMplus, including best practices for entering grades, controlling student visibility settings, and revealing identities when appropriate. Whether you're new to QMplus or looking to refine your grading process, these steps will help you navigate anonymous marking with confidence.
-
How It Works
- Anonymous marking hides student names from course administrators, teachers, and non-editing teachers. Instead, they see a randomly generated Participant number.
- Student identities remain hidden until they are manually revealed.
-
Entering Grades
- Do not enter grades directly in the gradebook or grader report.
- Grades must be entered via the grading interface. This can be done manually or by using the offline grading worksheet.
- Once identities are revealed, grades will automatically be added to the gradebook.
-
What Students See
- Until identities are revealed, students cannot see their final grades.
- If rubrics are used, they remain hidden from students until identities are revealed.
- Feedback comments are visible to students, even with anonymous marking enabled, unless additional settings are applied to prevent this.
-
Hiding Feedback Comments
- To hide feedback along with grades, use the Marking Workflow to keep marks and comments hidden until you choose to release them.
- Alternatively, you can hide the assignment link and gradebook item until you are ready to reveal identities and final grades.
-
Grading
- A reminder that graders should always mark work using the grading interface or an offline grading worksheet.
- The Marking Allocation feature allows submissions to be assigned to specific markers.
-
Revealing identities
- Once student identities are revealed, anonymous marking cannot be reactivated.
- At this point, students will see their final grades and rubrics (if used).
