Our review of a workshop using Artificial Intelligence ethically within learning and research

AI literacy workshop: Exploring Ethical AI Use in Learning and Research

I recently had the privilege of attending an enlightening workshop titled “Using Artificial Intelligence Ethically within Learning and Research: An AI Literacy Workshop” at the Mile End Library. Led by Paula Funnell and James Soderman, this in-person session provided valuable insights into the ethical application of AI in educational settings.

As a Learning Technologist, I was particularly impressed by the seamless integration of online tools, including Mentimeter, which enhanced the interactive nature of the workshop. The presenters skillfully navigated through various AI platforms without any technical hiccups, creating a smooth and engaging experience for all participants. 

Key workshop components

The workshop covered a comprehensive range of topics, including: 

• introduction to AI in learning and research
• advantages and limitations of AI
• effective prompting techniques
• utilising AI for research purposes

One of the highlights was the hands-on activities that allowed participants to actively engage with different AI tools. This practical approach fostered collaboration and idea-sharing among the diverse group of attendees, which included academics, Learning Technologists (Jade Mills), and QMA staff (Elise Omfalos and Giorgia Pigato). 

Notable takeaways

Several key points stood out during the workshop: 

• the importance of well-crafted prompts in generating quality AI output
• the vast array of AI tools available, each with unique features
• the rapid pace of AI development and innovation
• variations in results produced by different AI tools
• the potential of AI to enhance teaching and learning processes
• the critical need for ethical considerations when implementing AI
• AI's value in boosting research productivity and innovation
• the necessity of carefully weighing potential risks and ethical concerns.

Exploring new tools

The workshop introduced me to several new AI tools, including Perplexity, which I used to help structure and edit this article. This experience has sparked my interest in further exploring these innovative platforms. 

Recommendation and future sessions

I highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in AI, regardless of their experience level. While no future sessions are currently scheduled, you can request notifications for upcoming dates through the Library Services CPD site. Given the high demand and waiting list for the workshop I attended, I suggest signing up early when new dates are announced. 

Conclusion

In conclusion, this AI Literacy Workshop provided an excellent opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the ethical use of AI in education and research. The collaborative atmosphere, practical activities, and diverse perspectives shared by attendees made for an enriching experience that will undoubtedly inform my future work as a Learning Technologist.
