Serving as a Student Ambassador at Queen Mary University of London has been a transformative experience for me. From the moment I joined the team, I realized how much this role would push me beyond my comfort zone and allow me to develop key skills that are crucial not just academically, but also in my future career in diplomacy and international relations.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this position has been the opportunity to engage with first-year students and help them navigate the university's digital learning platforms, such as Q-Review and QMplus, as part of the TELT initiative. Presenting to new students not only allowed me to improve my public speaking and presentation skills, but also gave me a chance to help others adapt to university life, which can be challenging for many. Ensuring that they felt confident using these platforms was a vital responsibility, as it directly impacted their ability to engage with their courses.
The role also allowed me to fine-tune my leadership and teamwork abilities. Often, I collaborated with other ambassadors to manage workshops and troubleshoot common issues students faced with the TELT applications. These situations required a great deal of coordination and problem-solving under time constraints. By working closely with my peers, I learned the art of effective collaboration and how to communicate technical information in an accessible and supportive way. This experience has significantly bolstered my confidence in taking on leadership roles, both within university and in my future endeavors, where strategic communication is key.
Additionally, the ambassador role has given me firsthand experience in event management and mentoring. Whether presenting in front of a group of students or assisting with individual queries, these tasks sharpened my organizational and communication skills. Through these activities, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how to manage stress while staying calm and composed in high-pressure situations.
Reflecting on my time as an ambassador, I can confidently say that the skills and lessons I’ve learned are invaluable. They’ve not only enriched my personal development but also prepared me for a future career in international relations, where teamwork, diplomacy, and effective communication are at the heart of success. This experience has strengthened my passion for serving as a bridge between different communities and making meaningful contributions to the university’s outreach efforts.
