When I first became a TELT Student Ambassador, I saw it as a chance to contribute to the academic community while developing new skills. Looking back, I realise the role has shaped my university experience in ways I hadn’t anticipated. What began as an opportunityto support others quickly turned into a platform for my own personal and professional growth. One of the most significant aspects of this role has been the development of my communication skills. As a TELT Ambassador, I’ve had the chance to collaborate with students and staff, presenting ideas about how technology can enhance learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether presenting with Tosin at our sessions, or aiding my peers in their presentations, each interaction pushed me out of my comfort zone, building my confidence in public speaking and fostering the ability to convey complex ideas clearly. This has translated directly into my academic life, where I now feel more at ease participating in seminars and leading discussions. One of the most rewarding aspects of being an ambassador has been working with a dedicated and inspiring team, and working with like-minded ambassadors. Every day felt like a blast, and was something I looked forward to even if it was a tiring week! The role has given me the opportunity to build lasting networks, where I feel connected with peers who share a passion for improving the student learning experience, and these relationships have enriched both my academic and social life. Collaborating with staff especially has shown me how dedicated the university is to continually evolving the learning environment, and it’s been inspiring to see the impact that students can have when we’re given a platform to share our ideas.
The cherry on top was the final follow up event, where us student ambassadors received certificates for our hard work alongside a celebratory lunch. (I received the most engaging presentation!)
Looking ahead, I feel much more prepared for future challenges—whether it’s leading a team, tackling complex projects, or pursuing my own academic and career goals. The skills I’ve gained as a TELT Ambassador will no doubt serve me well in any future role I take on. But beyond the skills, this experience has shaped my perspective on the importance of student leadership and advocacy in these important learning experiences. We often think of ourselves as passive participants in the learning process, but through TELT, I’ve learned that we can actively shape the tools and resources that define our education with our advice and experiences.
