Meet our Students

Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and have a wide range of interests. Find out more about some of them below.

“I love geography! Firstly, it is an interdisciplinary subject. Secondly, studying at Queen Mary leads to so many career opportunities. I am currently reading for a BA in Geography and the combination of both human and physical geography has allowed me to combine my passion for human development as well as environmental sustainability. I chose to study here because it’s in London. The urbanity of London makes it a potential field site for research and an interesting space of change and interactions. I was also intrigued by the history Queen Mary has and the commitment of the University to social justice. The best part about studying at Queen Mary is that everything is on campus! Whether it’s the library or the nearest café, the campus has it all.”
— Victoria Nakyejwe, BA Geography (3rd year)
“The thing I have enjoyed most about studying Geography and Business Management at Queen Mary is the breadth of study that the course enables. You are able to choose from a wide range of modules including both human and physical geography and the addition of business management will definitely help for going for jobs and internships. I chose this course because it was very broad. As I prefer human geography I was able to deepen my knowledge of societal and cultural underpinnings and explore my favourite topics further in my dissertation. The business modules also gave me fundamental knowledge of the key areas in business which has been useful.
— Joseph Brown, BSc Geography with Business Management (3rd Year)
“The campus is easy to navigate as everything is on one site. The careers team are very hands-on, in my first and second years they held workshops in my classes involving activities like professional CV writing; this has helped me land other opportunities. I chose the course as it’s interdisciplinary nature would allow me to study geography along with aspects of the subjects, I took for A-Level, Sociology, Government & Politics and Chemistry. I wanted a course that would teach me about environmental issues & solutions with the ability to apply them to different global and socio-economic contexts.
— Rianno Thomas, BSc Geography (2nd Year)
"After visiting several universities in and outside London, I liked Queen Mary the most. For me, it was important to be close to dynamic city life, but at the same time have the convenience and safe environment of a campus-based university; Queen Mary provided both. During my time at Queen Mary, many other factors have contributed to making my experience enjoyable, exciting and fulfilling. The university offers a range of career programmes, in and out of campus, often in collaboration with external partners that provide students with excellent professional experiences, and I've made the most of them."
— Maria Hadzhiev, BA Geography, 3rd Year
“I am Aminah, a first-year student reading Geography and Business Management. This course is well-rounded and enables me to pursue my passion for Geography and provide a pathway to multiple career opportunities. It covers a range of geographical topics including economic, environmental and cultural themes, complemented by the business modules. I have acquired a foundation in economics and reflected on management in relation to the social, economic and legal conditions within which it operates. I find the lectures to be engaging and current, which allows us to view geography from a global perspective. Both the lecturers and tutors are approachable, helpful and understanding."
— Aminah Ossman, BSc Geography with Business Management, 1st Year
“I chose to study Geography because I was looking to keep as many career options open as possible. With the numerous transferable skills that Geography provides, I have been able to do that. Geography at Queen Mary is more than one single discipline or subject, it provides a new way of thinking and understanding the world around you, more so than any other degree. The issues and debates we engage with are regularly taken from contemporary issues such as housing in London or health inequalities in America. Queen Mary has the luxury of being in Central London, something that all students are advised to take advantage of."
— William Robertshaw, BA Geography, 2nd Year
“I have just completed my BSc in Environmental science and I can safely say that I’ve had an incredible experience at Queen Mary. I actually stumbled onto the course more by chance during a Queen Mary Open Day while looking at geography and biology courses. For me Environmental Science was the perfect fusion between the two and gave me the freedom to start to go into more depth on issues that I have always been passionate about. I especially liked the interactive nature of the modules, with a fusion of group work, field trips and laboratory within many modules. I would definitely say for anyone looking at Queen Mary, do your research into all the courses that are available, you will often find ones you didn’t even know existed!"
— Deanna Emeny, Environmental Science, 3rd Year
“For me, taking part in the activities and schedules on offer was a key part of me getting settled in as an undergraduate Environmental Scientist at Queen Mary! During my welcome week, the School of Geography had all the Environmental Science students meet and introduce ourselves to each other. This was a great starting point as it meant we got to see the faces of the people on our course, and consequentially, the people we were going to see the most over the course of our time at Queen Mary. As part of the second year module ‘Environmental Research Methods’, I attended a field trip to Blencathra, The Lake District this October."
— Katie Mulherin, Environmental Science, 2nd Year
