Now in its 12th year, the Barts and Queen Mary Science Festival returned as an in-person event on Tuesday 20th June. The 2023 festival was supported by members of the NIHR Barts Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Public and Patient Advisory Group (PPAG).
This year’s event was a welcome return, following the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic when the festival was run virtually, offering schools who were unable to attend, an opportunity to participate in science activities.
Jane Batchelor, Centre and Events Manager at the NIHR Barts BRC said: “Through an impressive line up of virtual science talks and an array of fun science activities featured on the festival's website, organisers ensured that even schools unable to physically attend the event could still engage. These activities remain accessible, so researchers and other interested individuals have easy access to science-themed resources and initiatives.
“The festival's commitment to inclusivity and outreach prompted us to continue offering virtual resources, as evidenced by the extensive list of science-themed activities available on the festival webpage.”
The Derek Willoughby lecture theatre at Queen Mary University of London’s picturesque Charterhouse Square Campus, served as the venue. Festival-goers eagerly participated in a range of activities, including a captivating heart talk that allowed students and other attendees to practice resuscitation techniques on a heart resuscitation dummy. Additionally, mini career talks provided insights into potential career paths, while a dental health talk included a fun quiz that revealed surprising sugar content in certain soft drinks.
The success of the festival owes much to the support and participation of its attendees and volunteers. The organisers expressed their gratitude to all those who attended and contributed to this year's event, acknowledging their invaluable assistance in making the festival a resounding triumph. With its diverse offerings, the Barts and Queen Mary Science Festival continues to inspire and nurture the next generation of scientists and medical professionals, fostering a love for science that will undoubtedly shape the future.Further information
