Profile
I am a social science and behavioural researcher working in the NIHR Global Health Research Group on advancing early diagnosis of cancer in Southern Africa (AWACAN-ED), which aims to develop and evaluate tools to reduce patient and health system delays. I joined the team at QMUL in the UK in July 2024 as a postdoctoral research fellow. My focus is on evaluating community-based interventions using different health communication and behaviour change strategies to raise symptom awareness and encourage timely help seeking to improve early diagnosis of cervical, breast and colorectal cancers in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Additionally, I am involved in the evaluation of the acceptability and feasibility of a clinical decision support (CDS) toolkit aiming to increase confidence in clinical decision-making among healthcare providers at primary level, and improve timely referral of patients with possible breast, cervical and colorectal cancer in the above two countries.
I have completed my PhD in Public Health and Policy at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. My study focused on barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening and acceptability of HPV self-sampling among immigrant women from Morocco and Pakistan in Spain. I explored individual and social determinants of participants’ screening behaviours, as well as health system challenges to access cancer prevention services. My PhD has been funded by UKRI - ESRC as part of the UBEL Doctoral Training Partnership scheme.
I have a particular expertise in qualitative research and mixed-method studies, as well as using social network analysis methods, including visualization of network graphs and surveys. I have previously conducted research and/or managed multi-country projects on sexual and reproductive health, with especial focus on safe abortion in El Salvador, Cameroon, Peru and Panama, and on girls and young women’s migration in Ethiopia. I hold a MSc in Global Public Health and a MA in International Development Studies. My background is in Social Sciences and Communication.
