Queen Mary Impact Fund

Supporting the translation of your research into impact

About the Impact Fund

The Impact Fund supports your journey to achieve impact and translate research in line with UKRI's mission. Our goal is to prioritize projects aligned with our Research Impact strategy, potentially featured in future REF Impact Case Studies.

To get advice on how best to support your next steps please contact your relevant impact officer they will be able to guide you to the most appropriate funding mechanism and can advise you on when the Impact Fund is the most appropriate source. The fund supports your journey to achieve impact and looks to bridge the gap between research funding landscape and the translational funding landscape and can act as a much needed bridge on your journey to impact.

Queen Mary administers IAA funds for EPSRC, BBSRC, and MRC remits, supplemented by our annual HEIF allocation and support from the Research England Policy Support Fund. These awards aim to enhance research and seize new opportunities to create impact.

What the Impact Fund is Looking to Support

The Impact Fund aims to support projects leading to a wide range of impacts, including: Civic, Political, Commercial, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental, Health, and Cultural domains.

Past projects include early-stage commercialization, collaborations with industry partners, policy changes, social impact, and innovative knowledge exchange. Projects should address identified societal needs, challenges, or opportunities within any UKRI research council remit where Queen Mary research applies.

Available Funding and Use of Funds

The Impact Fund is highly competitive, and we have more projects than we are able to support. We are committed to supporting as many projects as we can, and strongly encourage all prospective applicants to approach their faculty impact officer for a conversation, so we can discuss how best to support your project and to enable you to submit the strongest possible application.

The fund typically considers projects ranging from £5,000 to £50,000, covering direct costs for up to 12 months. In exceptional cases, we may provide funding up to £100,000 if justified. Projects seeking this level of funding should consult the relevant faculty Impact Engagement Officer. The Impact Fund operates with limited funds, aiming to support projects equally to advance their impact.
